Fitbits (& Garmins etal.) Smart but Dumb
Everybody loves computers. We use them everywhere. In our watches, in our sat navs in our dashcams, all sorts of things. They are part of our lives and we come to rely on them even when we don’t even think of them as computers.
One such item is the Fitbit®. These devices record your activity and save it for when they connect to your online account later. They then upload all the data they have collected, so you can view graphs and charts showing your progress,
All very simple but quite a lot of technology is involved. Your Fitbit uses Bluetooth technology to communicate to your computer. Your Internet connection is used to transmit the information to the Fitbit website. The Fitbit app on your computer must work well with the Windows Operating System, both of which update themselves from time to time and can get out of sync. I have fixed Fitbit and Garmin ® smart watches with snags in all these areas. Often it is a case of getting all the programs up to date on the device and the computer but sometimes it can be more complex.
